This research develops a taxonomy of operational risks impacting corporate sustainability. A literature review and analysis of 100 business cases reveal relationships between these risks, their causes, and their economic, social, and environmental consequences. The findings help companies classify and manage sustainability-related operational risks, though the specific relationships may vary across sectors and individual cases.
The paper delves into the intertwining of financial institutions and environmental concerns, particularly climate change and biodiversity loss. It introduces a dual framework based on 'impact' and 'risk' to explore their complex relationship. It analyzes the co-existing but sometimes opposing approaches at their interface, elucidating how finance, climate change, and biodiversity intertwine in the realm of "sustainable finance".
“The study demonstrates the capability of certain public sector banks to bear operational risk on a particular level of regulatory capital. The ability of a bank to be successful under unfavorable conditions is related to its operational risk, regulatory capital and management processes.”
"In this article we analyze a sample of international #insurers between 2013 and 2022, and show that the purchase of #reinsurance is negatively related to their #sustainability, as measured by #esg scores. Furthermore, we illustrate that insurers' losses decrease with higher levels of reinsurance and sustainability. However, while reinsurance brings down insurers' profitability, sound ESG scores are related to lower expenses and increasing profitability. Our interpretation is that strong ESG profiles may serve as a cheaper alternative to reinsurance for #riskmitigation."
The study emphasizes the need for a better understanding of #ai to avoid policies that may hinder its benefits. It argues for a cross-disciplinary approach to AI #governance and clarifying its core concepts to build trust. The paper addresses two key questions: 1) What is the best way to safely introduce AI to maximize well-being and #sustainability in light of its potential #risks? and 2) What specific policy steps should be taken to implement it?
This research presents a balance #scorecard tool for assessing #disasterriskreduction and #resilience (#dr3) in the context of #floods, #droughts and #heatwaves. It aims to support the integration and monitoring of #climateadaptation, #sustainability and #riskreduction into development planning in vulnerable communities. This approach contributes to strengthening #governance, resilience and #riskmanagement in disaster-prone areas.
This paper explores the #reputationalrisk associated with #esg investments and provides a formal theoretical valuation system for ESG reputation. The authors argue that ESG criteria adoption has multiple positive dimensions and outcomes, but the analysis of the #risks related to #sustainability is uncommon. They model ESG reputational risk using paradigms of #behaviouralfinance, defining it by subjective probabilities framed in a #probability function based on potential trustees' preferences. The paper highlights the need for accurate evaluation of reputational risks related to ESG investments by firms and other institutions, including #insurance companies and #pensionfunds.
"This paper explores to what extent the regulatory strategies that were developed in ‘traditional’ financial law to support confidence in ratings and benchmarks can be exported to the ‘new’ world of ESG finance."
" The global climate crisis and the economy’s green transition are giving rise to new types of risks for banks. This paper analyses some of the key international bank regulatory standards, namely disclosure, risk management, governance and regulatory capital. "
"The ambitious policy agenda in relation to sustainability requires a shifting mindset in the financial sector, in order to finance the transformation towards sustainability."
